Hello! Today is all about shoppy shops, yay! Though I’m sure there’s multiple sources, the adorably accurate term came to me in a TikTok from creator Neil Shankar (see @TallNeil on TikTok) Also, here’s a Grub Street article diving deep into shoppy shop culture.

For the purposes of today’s newsletter, a shoppy shop is any type of store where I can walk around, browse, and probably leave with something cute, gifty and/or fun - whether that is a fancy bottle of olive oil or a claw clip with a funky pattern on it. Therefore - I’ve included gourmet grocery shops, bookstores, natural wine shops + coffee shops that sell other goods, and more on this list!

Today, I present to you - an exhaustive list of shoppy shops in LA. A 6-hour flight for me = a TTS newsletter listing 75+ shops for you, organized by neighborhood. Enjoy!

Altadena

• Altadena Beverage & Market - specialty grocery store often hosting events and fun pop ups! Peep their IG for the download

Atwater Village

• Wine & Eggs - I think it’s fair to say Wine & Eggs was a leader in the shoppy shop movement - and they do it so well! Head here to pick up a bottle of wine and some gourmet grocery goodies before your next dinner party or housewarming. *Female-owned

• Dreams - sister shop to Wine & Eggs, Dreams focuses more on home goods and clothing. And yes… it is quite dreamy! *Female-owned

• Goodies - You know it, you love it… chic home decor, all under $25!

• Potted - a lovely plant shop also selling decor items *however* they are temporarily closed ugh!! Alas - they will be reopening soon under new ownership - follow them and stay tuned for what’s next! *Female-owned

Burbank

• Tansy LA - plants & decor also offering monthly community events + workshops! *Black and female-owned

• Fancy Free Liquor - Desert & cowboy-themed liquor store selling wine & spirits + accessories

Calabasas

• Blackbird General Store - clothing & gifts in Old Town Calabasas

Crenshaw

• Malik Books - bookstore often hosting community events, they also have a second location inside Westfield Culver City mall! *Black-owned

Downtown / Chinatown / Boyle Heights

• Latinx with Plants - cute and affordable plant shop *Latinx + female-owned

• Sesame LA - gourmet superette with a focus in Asian food products *AAPI-owned

• Paper Plant Co - the sweetest stationary shop, located right next door to Sesame! *AAPI-owned

• The Last Bookstore - massive bookstore that includes a bank vault and a “tunnel of books” upstairs

Eagle Rock

• Milkfarm - cheese shop & gourmet grocery goods

• Folia Collective - cutie plant shop alert! *Female-owned

East Hollywood / Franklin Village / Hollywood

• Soap Plant / Wacko - quirky gift shop selling a wide variety of goods, including costume attire

• Sightglass Coffee - gourmet grocery, cafe, wine and home goods

Echo Park

• Cookbook - a gourmet grocery selling fresh produce, natural wines, and a ton of unique + fun sauces, spreads and snacks.

• The Echo Park Time Travel Mart - this place is so rad! “A non-profit time travel convenience store” benefitting 826LA. Learn more on their IG!

• Stories Books & Cafe - book store with a precious coffee shop + patio in back

• Bloom & Plume - floral studio, coffee shop and mini shoppy shop *LGBTQIA and Black-owned

Glendale / Montrose

• Lost Books - sister store to The Last Bookstore in DTLA, this spot not only sells books but also offers records, plants and a small assortment of stationary goods. It’s a worth a visit for the plant tunnel entrance alone.

Highland Park

• Shorthand - a pretty perfect stationary store that makes me want to go back to school, just so I have an excuse to buy cool pens and paper.

• Crush & Touch Art Supply - great for unique gifts, for yourself included!! So much to look at in here, and love all the art supplies

• Sip/Snack - a cutie shop selling natural wines and you guessed it.. snacky stuff.

• Cookbook - a gourmet grocery selling fresh produce, natural wines, and a ton of unique + fun sauces, spreads and snacks.

• Prelude & Dawn - colorfully curated gift shop

Koreatown

• Open Market - sandwich & coffee shop also selling natural wine and home goods *AAPI-owned

Los Feliz

• Skylight Books & Art Annex - a two-part bookstore - one side selling a wide variety of books & gifts, the other side focused more on art & coffee table books.

• BellJar - curated lifestyle boutique down the block from Skylight!

Malibu / Topanga Canyon

• Kinship Station - earthy & hippie home goods in the heart of Topanga Canyon

• Wittmore - men’s clothing & home goods with a surf flair (truly, the entire Malibu Country Mart is one big shoppy shop)

• Abierto - home goods; a great place to browse while you wait for your Lily’s burrito!

Mar Vista

• Tortoise General Store - Japanese home goods

• Whimsy & Row - neutral-forward, eco-conscious women’s clothing and goods

Pasadena
