Happy Monday everybody, I hope your tans are coming in nicely and you consumed many aperol spritzes this weekend. I’ve personally been making an effort to be outside as much as possible and soak in the sun rays!
There comes a time when a millennial find themselves in a rut, stuck in their routine and feeling like a slave to their 9-5. This propels them to seek out a new hobby and think this will solve all of their problems. It may sound like I’m poking fun but I’ve fallen into this trope many a time. Currently, I’m trying to become a tennis girlie again, a community garden girlie and a 7 AM neighborhood walk girlie all at once.
I’ve been doing lots of research on “adult extracurricular activities” in LA and wanted to share some of my research with the TTS community - see a few ideas below!
Pickleball - My mom is going to be so excited I included this in the round up. Pickleball has been taking the entire world by storm in recent years, and it’s definitely exploding in LA. Recess did a great round up of courts with lots of juicy info, LA Parks has even more info, and Zog Sports has plenty of leagues you can sign up for!
Pottery - Whether you’re a beginner seeking classes or you’re experienced and need a studio to hone your craft - there’s quite a few options in LA, here’s a few that have been recommended to me (pottery girlie loading… ETA Q3-Q4 2023).
Tennis - Oftentimes, your local park/courts will have their own online reservation systems for courts - ex: Weho’s Plummer Park, Griffith Park, and City of Santa Monica. If you’re looking for a league or some peeps to play with, check out MeetUps like this!
Los Angeles Public Library Programs - I really wanted to promote LAPL’s Creators in Residence program, but they just closed applications 3 days ago ugh! Regardless - read up and stay tuned for the next round! In the meantime… check out the library’s events calendar for tons of fun, wholesome programming.
Volunteer at a Community Garden - there are so many beautiful community gardens throughout the city! Find a garden through the Los Angeles Community Garden Council website here - a couple of my favorites: East Hollywood and Ocean View Farms.
Live Drawing Classes - I am dying to try this particular one, Art & Friends! Shoutout to my friend Sharon who posted from their latest event last night and reminded me of its existence :)
Volunteer at a Farmers Market - Farmers markets bring the ultimate sense of community. Oftentimes you can volunteer to help out with your local market - for example, Santa Monica has a program!
Find activities through city business districts like DCBID and Santa Monica - City websites are filled with information and draw inspiration - my favorites: Downtown Center Business Improvement District and City of Santa Monica
SoFar Sounds - Though SoFar Sounds has discontinued their volunteer program, you can apply to be an event, a talent curator, or an artist! See more info here.
