A Musical Renaissance in Los Angeles
LA is moving beyond the traditional top 40 music you typically groove to on a night out. Genres like disco, jazz and more are popping up all over the city
I had a conversation with a couple friends this weekend about how we can never stay away from Instagram for very long, no matter what we do. We can go so far as physically deleting the app, but we still find ourselves navigating to the website manually on browser. After discussing further, I proposed an argument for why it’s extra difficult to break the addiction these days - Instagram has become a universal resource for information, especially when it comes to making social plans. Whether I’m checking what time a restaurant opens or discovering a “one night only” DJ pop up from one of the people I follow, Instagram hosts it all. Which leads me to today’s newsletter topic -
An explosion of music theme nights are covering my feeds lately - and I’m loving it! Bars and restaurants are using social media to promote a rotation of DJs, theme nights, and music genres. Though there’s plenty of pop/top 40 music on a night out in LA, there’s suddenly a plethora of genre options beyond this - namely disco and jazz. Below you’ll find a few (of MANY!) bars hosting regular music “pop up” events. I highly recommend following your favorite bars and restaurants on Instagram if you haven’t already - this is your key to finding the coolest happenings in LA!
Jazz
General Lee's in Chinatown is currently hosting jazz night every Tuesday! The upstairs space is cozy and they serve up great cocktails. This is an easy option for a date night or catch up with a friend.
Bathtub Gin in WeHo hosts a rotation of jazz musicians every Wednesday. Make sure to make a reservation for this speakeasy ahead of time.
Disco/Funk
The Let’s Go! in the Arts District has quickly become the place to be on a night out in LA. Check their Instagram weekly for the lineup - they’re hosting a variety of different funk, soul, italò and of course - disco - DJs every night.
Gold Line in Highland Park is a stunning vinyl bar on Figueroa, and you can find a DJ spinning records every night of the week here.
80’s
Breakroom86 in Koreatown is best known for playing 80’s classics - and the atmosphere inside can’t be beat. Check out their 80’s hip hop and R&B nights on Thursdays to get your dancing fix (and skip the ever-present weekend line to get in)
